Gresham High School sophomore visits hospital after eating marijuana-laced cookies

A 15-year-old Gresham High School sophomore went to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon after eating cookies baked with marijuana, police said. According to Gresham police Sgt. Claudio Grandjean, the boy "ingested too many and he got sick," and his parents took him to the hospital. Athena Vadnais, a spokeswoman for the Gresham-Barlow School District, said that at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, an ambulance was called to Gresham High School to treat a student who had "gone to the nurse's office complaining he didn't feel well and was throwing up." Police have identified the baker of the cookies as another 15-year-old sophomore boy. The student baked 12 to 15 cookies and sold them to his classmates. Vadnais said school officials still don't know where the sale occurred. She said that after Gresham High School Principal John Koch's investigation, "the school believes the cookies were sold or shared by five students." Koch was at a meeting off-site when the incident occurred, Vadnais said, but returned to manage the aftermath. Grandjean said that police are still investigating how many students ate the cookies because some may have shared a single cookie. Gresham High School Resource Officer Jeff Miller is writing a report based on his investigation and will send it to the Juvenile Division of Multnomah County district attorney's office for review. The office will then make a determination on how to charge the student who baked the cookies. Grandjean said he could be charged with distribution and possession of a controlled substance. The school will dole out punishment separately from the police. "We'll determine how the students involved will be disciplined once the investigation is completed," Vadnais said.
